Since September 2013, the Year 5 class have been working with Jonathan Buckley from YMCA White Rose on an amazing Enterprise Project. YMCA White Rose is a not-for-profit charitable organisation which provides help & support to children, young people and families in South and West Yorkshire with a range of dedicated services (for more information on the YMCA, please visit: www.ymcawhiterose. org.uk).
The Y5s have been looking at what the Bible teaches about poverty and justice followed by how individual Christians and Christian charities have stood up for justice, such as William Wilberforce and George Williams of the YMCA.
This year’s Y5 have just chosen a charity project to focus their efforts on: the ‘Yours Project’ which works with children with disabilities (see the YMCA White Rose website for more detail). This was following the pitches of various charities as part of a Dragon’s Den type activity & the children voting for the one that they most wanted to raise money for.
Last year, the Y5s looked at the work of many charities & how they help others. From this research they then had to present to each other in a ‘Dragons’ Den’ pitch situation in order to see which charity they should work to support. The children have raised money for Green Pastures which is a social enterprise charity working with disadvantaged & homeless people (visit: http://greenpastures.net/ for more information) as well as for the work of the YMCA.
The children even set up their own charity to support this work called: TASS Children’s Charity Miracle Makers & have produced their very own logo. The children took part in a whole host of different fund raising activities – all of which they designed themselves. These included: selling toys, books & games at the Christmas Fair, taking part in the Christingle Service & Christmas Productions to raise money, two Toy and Clothing Amnesties, putting on a Fairtrade Tuck-shop, holding an ‘Afternoon Tea, non-uniform day as well as putting on the most amazing talent show. The money raised went to their chosen charity Green Pastures and their work in supporting homeless people, as well as to the YMCA Charity Shops in Rotherham and Sheffield, helping support the YMCA’s work across South and West Yorkshire.
