We believe that our early years’ education is among the very best in the city!
As Reception or Foundation Stage 2 (FS2) is a child’s first year in school, we see it as being extremely important to giving your child the very best start in their learning journey!
We have an amazing facility complete with its own outdoor mud kitchen, play boat, role play house, Doodle den, play slide, music wall, water wall, pagoda construction area & mini-beast hotel.
We love it & so do our children!
Children in FS2 / Reception class follow the EYFS Statutory Framework which comprises of seven areas of learning:
- Communication and language development – This involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment, to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves & to speak and listen in a range of situations.
- Physical development – This involves providing opportunities for children to be active and interactive as well as develop their co-ordination, control & movement. Children are also helped to understand the importance of physical activity & to make healthy choices in relation to food.
Personal, social and emotional development – This involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves & others, to form positive relationships & develop respect, to develop social skills & learn how to manage their feelings, to understand appropriate behaviour in groups & to have confidence in their own abilities.
- Literacy development – This involves encouraging children to link sounds & letters & so begin to read & write. Children are given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems &other written materials) in order to ignite their interest.
- Mathematics – This involves providing children with opportunities to develop & improve their skills in counting, understand & use numbers, calculate simple addition & subtraction problems as well as describe shape, space & measures.
- Understanding the world – This involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world & community through opportunities to explore, observe & find out about people, places, technology & the environment.
- Expressive arts and design – This involves enabling children to explore & play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities & encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas & feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, design & technology.
The FS2 classroom provides an environment that is not only welcoming and caring, but also stimulating and inspirational.
Such an environment will enable our children to make an effective transition from home to school life and give them the very best possible start to their education. Children have their own fenced off play area and extensive resources for outdoor play that they make great use of!
Parents of children beginning school each September are invited to an information evening in order to meet the staff, Chair of Governors & the Headteacher.

Many of you may remember that Jo Stoney and Lisa Wall left TASS in 2015 to devote more time to their company ‘Ready Steady School’ which sells educational resource boxes to help parents and carers support their child in preparation for starting school and during their first year.
In October 2017, they were winners of the Retail Entrepreneur, Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Sunday Award. They gained a retweet by Theo to his 500,000 Twitter followers and access to his #SBS website and shop alongside a network of support. Well done Mrs Stoney & Mrs Wall!
