‘No chocolate, crisps or sweets – save these as a special treat!’
At Totley All Saints, we have a back to basics approach on encouraging our children to make the right food choices early on in order that they develop good attitudes for life. This is also a key element of our status as a Healthy School & one which we are keen to uphold. As part of this drive, we talk about healthy eating in assembly & in class as well as enforce a ‘No chocolate, crisps or sweets – save these as a special treat!’ rule.
Please note however, that ‘something chocolaty’ can be eaten as part of a packed lunch if it it is a ‘pudding’ following on from the main savoury part of the meal. This could be items with a chocolate covering/ chocolate chips etc. on a cake, home bake, cereal bar or biscuit. These items cannot be eaten at break time as they are not part of a meal & mustn’t include confectionery items such as chocolate bars (Mars, Crunchie, Twix…etc.).
We are very grateful to our parents in helping us to keep to this rule by ensuring that none of these items are given as part of break time snacks or as packed lunches. If parents do forget however, we send a little reminder home in their child’s pack lunch box to help them remember next time. No child is ever in trouble for bringing in any of these items as a snack, but we do encourage our children to keep to this rule.
Merit Treats (special reward afternoons chosen by the winning Merit team) often include snacks & this may sometimes involve some of the ‘outlawed’ foods – but as this is a reward for fantastic behaviour & learning, we hope to instill the message that these foods are actually to be regarded as a treat rather than something that should be consumed on a very regular basis.
