The Y6s visit Crucial Crew at the end of their time in Key Stage 2 & as part of their transition to secondary school & young adult life. This is a ‘crucial’ part of their safety education & takes place at the Lifewise Centre in Rotherham. The programme has been running since 2005 in conjunction with South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue & in partnership with local authorities, the British Red Cross, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE), Her Majesty’s Court Service (HMCS), NHS Trusts & the Safe@Last Charity.
The Y6s visit the centre & travel around a type of ‘film set’ complete with a house, back garden, park & high street. They then have to work through a series of real life scenarios that are related to personal safety & steer the children towards making the right choices in life. Aspects covered are areas such as: arson, hoax calls, road safety, fire safety, travel safety, internet safety, anti-social behaviour & First Aid.
The children always get such a lot from this day & the discussion that it generates back it school is extremely meaningful as children begin to make big choices & decisions about how they behave as a young adult. To find out more about Crucial Crew, please click: Crucial Crew
