Learning ladderLearning ladderLearning ladderLearning ladderLearning ladderLearning ladderLearning ladderLearning ladderLearning LadderParents of older children may be very aware of the previous system of assessment which involved ascribing Levels of Attainment to pupils in order to be able to judge if a child had reached the standard of learning that might be expected for their age.

However, the system of levels has now been removed as part of the government’s reforms to education in September 2014.

A Change in Assessment in Response to the New Curriculum:

As well as working hard on our New Curriculum (in place since 2014), TASS was also involved in the Sheffield Assessment Project which came up with its own model to aid assessment & has been adopted in the majority of schools across Sheffield as well as many across South Yorkshire & even beyond. Since its introduction in July 2014, we have worked hard to align the series of learning steps from the STAT system with our own ‘Level Ladder’ system which was already in place & was used & understood by our children.

The TASS New Assessment System – in Brief:

Learning ladder

Children work their way up the ‘Learning Ladder’ through a series of ‘Learning Steps’ from 1 (age 0 to 11 months) to 36 (the expected stage at Year 7). This then continues into secondary school.

This change has now been applied to all children in all year groups following a staggered start as levels were phased out. Children are now all tested under the national SATs system which was introduced in May 2016.

Within each year group, there are 3 learning stages: developing (the lowest or beginning), secure (middle & reached the expected level for their age group ) & extending (highest & achieved mastery of the year group).

Parents & carers need to be aware that since its introduction in 2014, the Curriculum is pitched at a higher level than previous & the expectations at each stage are much higher than before. As such, the new developing, secure & extending stages do not equate to the old ‘a, b & c’ of levels.

A New System for Children:

Since its implementation, our children have become  very familiar with our system of assessment as a way of talking about their learning & where they are heading to. The Snakes & Ladders theme is used throughout & works well as a means of explaining the idea of progression through the steps, as well as making the concepts of assessment as child friendly as possible.

As under the old system of leveling, children are given a reminder of what they should be aspiring to using the ‘Learning Ladder Adder’ Posters as well as having self assessment / review maps for Maths, Reading, Writing, Spelling, Punctuation & Grammar in the front of their books (these used to be Maths Jigsaws & ‘Get it Sorted!’ booklets under Levels).

A New System for Teachers:

At TASS, we continue to assess children & meet, as always, every term (class teacher & the Senior Management Team) to discuss each child’s progress & attainment. Regular analysis of assessment results also continues to take place & will be fed back, as usual, to staff & governors in order to ensure that each child is reaching their full potential.

A New System for Parents:

Assessment information continues to be given to parents as part of parents’ evenings through Progress Report Booklets as well as through each child’s annual final report.
